Könntest du dich vorstellen und uns sagen, woher du kommst, wie alt du bist, seit wann du in Deutschland bist und was du hier machst?
Mein Name ist Valeriia Mikhailova und ich komme aus Russland. Ich bin 22 Jahre alt. Ich bin vor 6 Monaten nach Deutschland gekommen, um den Masterstudiengang „European and East-Asian Governance“ zu studieren.
Was ist Deine allgemeine Meinung über die Europäische Union?
Ich denke, dass die Europäische Union eine der größten Errungenschaften der Menschheit ist. Es ist großartig, grenzenlos reisen und arbeiten zu können, gemeinsame Werte zu teilen und in allen Bereichen hohe Standards zu haben. Natürlich hat die EU ihre Probleme, aber im Allgemeinen ist sie ein großer Akteur in der Weltpolitik.
Glaubst Du, dass die Teilnahme an Wahlen einen Einfluss auf die politische Entscheidungsfindung hat?
Ich glaube, dass die Teilnahme an Wahlen eine der wichtigsten Voraussetzungen für die Demokratie ist. Dies ist eine Manifestation der Bürgerbeteiligung am politischen Prozess. Die Beteiligung an den EU-Wahlen ist jedoch sehr gering. Das ist im Moment ein großes Problem, das die EU lösen muss.
Was sind Deiner Meinung nach die Vorteile der Europäischen Union aus politischer und persönlicher Sicht?
Meiner Meinung nach besteht der Hauptvorteil der Europäischen Union in der Möglichkeit, den Bürgern das Leben zu erleichtern. EU-Bürger kritisieren und beschweren sich zunehmend über verschiedene Aspekte der Politik. Sie vergessen, dass sie dank der EU die Möglichkeit haben, fast ganz Europa ohne Visum zu bereisen, zu studieren und in jedem EU-Land zu arbeiten, ohne viel Zeit mit bürokratischen Fragen zu verbringen, und gleiche Rechte in jedem EU-Land haben. Aus politischer Sicht ist sie ein wichtiger Akteur auf der Weltbühne, der die demokratischen Rechte wahrt. Die EU ist glaubwürdig, und viele Länder außerhalb der EU wollen hier Handel treiben und Geschäfte entwickeln.
Was sind Deiner Meinung nach die Probleme der Europäischen Union aus politischer und persönlicher Sicht?
Meiner Meinung nach ist eines der Hauptprobleme der EU der Mangel an Demokratie. Derzeit sind die Bürger in Brüssel nicht gut vertreten. Die EU-Parlamentswahlen sind eine der wenigen hörbaren Gelegenheiten. Natürlich gibt es das Petitionsrecht und die Europäische Bürgerinitiative, aber das gibt den Bürgern nicht viel Einfluss auf die Politik. Darüber hinaus sind sich nicht alle Bürger ausreichend darüber im Klaren, wie die Europäische Union funktioniert. Dies ist eine komplexe internationale Organisation, die sich nicht in wenigen Worten erklären lässt. Sie verursacht auch das Problem der Nichtbeteiligung der Bürger am politischen Entscheidungsprozess der EU.
Stell Dir vor, Du würdest die Europäische Union für einen Tag regieren. Was würdest Du ändern, um die EU zu verbessern?
Ich würde die Rolle des Europäischen Parlaments als wichtige Institution für die Vertretung der Bürger stärken. Außerdem würde ich die Transparenz und Präsenz der EU-Themen in den Medien erhöhen. Es wäre auch besser, Nichtregierungsorganisationen und privaten Akteuren mehr Möglichkeiten zur Beteiligung an der EU-Politikgestaltung zu geben.
Weißt Du, dass im Mai Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament stattfinden?
Ja, ich bin mir dessen bewusst.
Wenn Du an den Europawahlen teilnehmen könntest, würdest Du dann wählen? Und wenn ja, was wäre Deine Motivation zur Abstimmung?
Ich würde definitiv abstimmen, denn ich glaube, dass die Wahlen in der Europäischen Union transparent und fair sind. Es bedeutet, dass jede Stimme wichtig ist und etwas ändern könnte. Außerdem ist es eine Möglichkeit, dass die Bürger in Brüssel gehört werden und ihre Zukunft gestalten

Could you introduce yourself and tell us where you are from, how old you are, since when you are in Germany and what you are doing here?
My name is Valeriia Mikhailova, I’m from Russia. I’m 22 years old. I came to Germany 6 months ago to study at the Master’s program “European and East-Asian Governance”.
What is your general opinion about the European Union?
I think that European Union is one of the greatest achievements of mankind. It is great to be able to travel and work without boundaries, share common values and have high standards in all spheres. Of course, EU has its problems, but in general it is a big player in world politics.
Do you think voting in elections has an impact on political decision making?
I believe that voting in elections is one of the main requirements of democracy. This is a manifestation of citizen participation in the political process. However, the turnout to the EU elections is very small. This is a big problem at the moment, which the EU has to solve.
What are, in your opinion, the advantages of the European Union, from a political and a personal perspective?
I believe that the main advantage of the European Union is the possibility of making life easier for citizens. EU citizens increasingly criticize and complain about different aspects of politics. They forget that thanks to the EU, they have the opportunity to travel almost all over Europe without a visa, study and work in any EU country without spending a lot of time on bureaucratic issues, and have equal rights in whatever EU country they are. From a political point of view, the it is an important player on the world stage, which upholds democratic rights. The EU is credible and many countries outside the EU want to trade and develop business here.
What are, in your opinion, the problems of the European Union, from a political and a personal perspective?
It seems to me that one of the main problems of the EU is the lack of democracy. At the moment, citizens are not well represented in Brussels. The EU parliamentary elections are one of the few opportunities to be heard. Of course, there are petition rights and the European Civil Initiative, but this does not give citizens much influence on politics. In addition, not all citizens are sufficiently aware of how the European Union operates. This is a complex international organization that cannot be explained in a few words. It also causes the problem of non-participation of citizens in the EU policy-making process.
Imagine you would rule the European Union for one day. What would you change to improve the EU?
I would increase the role of the European Parliament, as a key institution for citizens’ representation. Also, I would increase transparency and presence of the EU issues in the media. It would be also better to give more opportunities for participation in the EU policy-making to NGOs and private actors.
Do you know that there are elections for the European Parliament in May?
Yes, I am aware of it.
If you could vote in the European elections, would you vote? And if so, what would be your motivation to vote?
I would definitely vote, because I believe that the elections in the European Union are transparent and fair. It means that every voice is important and it could change something. Besides, it is a way for ordinary citizens to be heard in Brussels and shape their future.
